Tetras

Introduction to Tetras

Tetras are a diverse and popular group of freshwater fish belonging to the family Characidae. Native to Central and South America, with a few species found in Africa, they are well-known for their vibrant colours, peaceful nature, and active schooling behaviour.

There are currently over 1,500 recognised species of tetras, ranging from the tiny Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) to the larger Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus). They vary widely in size, colouration, and habitat preferences, making them a staple in the aquarium hobby for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

Tetras are generally hardy, easy to care for, and compatible with a wide range of tank mates, making them ideal for community aquariums. Their schooling behaviour and vivid appearance create a dynamic and colourful display when kept in appropriate groups.
